Uriel Bunkwaney

Bunkwaney, a musician and guardian of the Arhuaco tradition, has forged a sonic path that transcends melody, connecting his people's spirituality with the universe. Since childhood, music has been an extension of his identity and a means to harmonize with Mother Earth. Raised in an environment where every sound tells a story and every dance is an offering, he learned from his father and the mamos, who instilled in him the importance of music in rituals and sacred ceremonies. His talent led him to explore both traditional Arhuaco instruments, such as the Charo and Carrizo, and Andean instruments like the quena and zampoña. His keen ear and intuition allowed him to develop a self-taught skill that enabled him to compose melodies inspired by nature and the Arhuaco worldview.

Beyond performance, Bunkwaney is committed to preserving and transmitting ancestral knowledge. He has worked on community projects to strengthen musical traditions among younger generations, sharing his wisdom through teaching and example. He dreams of recording and documenting his compositions to share his cultural heritage with the world while continuing to use music as a means of healing and balance. His melodies and lyrics reflect the cycles of life, sacred narratives, and his people's deep connection to their land and the natural world.

For Bunkwaney, music is not just an art form but a powerful message of preservation and harmony. His compositions honor the Arhuaco belief that every element of the universe has a purpose, and maintaining balance is essential for the well-being of all. Through his music, he embodies indigenous traditions, creating a bridge between past and present while inspiring listeners to reflect on their relationship with nature. His art serves as both a celebration of his people’s identity and a call to protect the planet and its ancestral wisdom.
