Territory
The Cubeo, also known as Pamiwa or the "first people," are an Indigenous community deeply connected to the heart of the Colombian Amazon, where nature is sacred, and rivers are more than just waterways—they are lifelines, storytellers, and spiritual guides. For centuries, they have preserved their ancestral traditions through storytelling, rituals, and craftsmanship, keeping their unique heritage alive. Their connection to nature is reflected in their handwoven crafts, myths, and way of life. They inhabit the Vaupés, Querarí, and Cuduyarí rivers within the Great Vaupés Reserve, a vast 3.3-million-hectare protected area that harbors biodiverse ecosystems and rich traditions, allowing them to live in harmony with the Amazon while using its natural resources responsibly. Reaching Cubeo villages like Tapurucuara and Villa María is an adventure in itself—an 8 to 9-hour trek through dense jungle and across rivers—yet their remote lifestyle has enabled them to safeguard their Indigenous traditions and maintain a deep respect for the balance of nature.

Cultural Identity and Traditions
The Cubeo have preserved their worldview and cosmogony through oral tradition, which, despite missionary influence, continues to be passed down by elders. Their origin story recounts how different groups emerged from sacred sites such as Carürübo and Kopoicoa, establishing clans (
sibs
) and their territories. A central figure in their mythology is the ancestral water anaconda (
Pwénte aínkü
), which ascended the Vaupés River and divided into segments, forming the hierarchy of clans. The Cubeo share ancestral ties with the Tucano and Siriano peoples. The Tucano, "people of the land," believe their world was created through the love of
Bugipu Ibiko-Khi
, the sun, who brought light and the sacred fruit
chontaduro
. Their universe is seen as a crystal sphere where all beings exist, with
Ñekú
as the discoverer of cosmic powers. The Siriano, "people of dreams," consider
Yuruparí
an eternal force shaping human essence, manifesting in rituals. Some believe their ancestors were six brothers, each with a distinct role, including the Guardian of the World, the Warrior, and the Shaman, who safeguards their spiritual knowledge.

Artisanal Craftsmanship
For the Cubeo, weaving is more than a skill—it’s a sacred practice that connects past and present. Using natural, eco-friendly materials like yaré vine and guarumá cane, they create stunning baskets, handwoven bags, and ceremonial pieces. Each design is inspired by the Amazon’s biodiversity, dreams, and mythology.
